Producer and A&R executive Remi Kabaka Jr. began collaborating with the band in 2011 and was listed as an official member alongside Albarn and Hewlett in the 2019 Gorillaz documentary Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. [1] The band primarily consists of four animated members: Stuart "2-D" Pot, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs. Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews and short cartoons. In reality, Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor, and often collaborates with other musicians. With Gorillaz, Albarn departed from the distinct Britpop of his band Blur through hip hop, electronic music, and world music through an "eccentrically postmodern " approach. [2] The band's 2001 debut album Gorillaz went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in Europe and earned the group an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Most Successful Virtual Band. [3] It was nominated for the Mercury Prize, but the nomination was withdrawn at the band's request. [4] Their second studio album, Demon Days (2005) went six times platinum in the UK [5] and double platinum in the US. [6] 7] 8] The third Gorillaz studio album, Plastic Beach, was released on 3 March 2010. The fourth, The Fall, was released on 25 December 2010 as a surprise gift for paying fan club members, then on 18 April 2011 as an official release. The fifth, Humanz, was released after a six-year hiatus on 28 April 2017. [9] Their sixth studio album, The Now Now, was released on 29 June 2018. [10] Gorillaz have won one Grammy Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, an NME Award and three MTV Europe Music Awards. [11] They have been nominated for ten Brit Awards, and won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards. [12] 13] By 2010, Gorillaz had sold over 20 million records worldwide. [14] History [ edit] Creation (1990–1999. edit] Musician Damon Albarn and comic creator Jamie Hewlett met in 1990 when guitarist Graham Coxon, a fan of Hewlett's work, asked him to interview Blur, a band Albarn and Coxon had recently formed. [15] The interview was published in Deadline magazine, home of Hewlett's comic strip Tank Girl. Hewlett initially thought Albarn was "arsey, a wanker" despite becoming acquaintances with the band, they often did not get on, especially after Hewlett began seeing Coxon's ex-girlfriend Jane Olliver. [15] Despite this, Albarn and Hewlett started sharing a flat on Westbourne Grove in London in 1997. [16] Hewlett had recently broken up with Olliver and Albarn was at the end of his highly publicised relationship with Justine Frischmann of Elastica. [15] The idea to create Gorillaz came about when Albarn and Hewlett were watching MTV. Hewlett said, If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a virtual band, something that would be a comment on that. 17] The band originally identified themselves as "Gorilla" and the first song they recorded was "Ghost Train. 18] which was later released as a B-side on their single " Rock the House " and the B-side compilation G Sides. The musicians behind Gorillaz' first incarnation included Albarn, Del the Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala, who had previously worked together on the track "Time Keeps on Slipping" for Deltron 3030 's eponymous debut album. [19] Although not released under the Gorillaz name, Albarn has said that "one of the first ever Gorillaz tunes" was Blur 's 1997 single " On Your Own. which was released for their fifth studio album Blur. [20] Gorillaz (2000–03. edit] The band's first release was the EP Tomorrow Comes Today, released on 27 November 2000. The band's first single was " Clint Eastwood " and was released on 5 March 2001. It was produced by hip hop producer Dan the Automator and originally featured UK rap group Phi Life Cypher, but the version that appears on the album features American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, 21] known on the album as Del tha' Ghost Rapper, a spirit in the band's drummer Russel Hobbs. [22] The Phi Life Cypher version of "Clint Eastwood" appears on the B-side album G Sides. On 26 March 2001, their first full-length album, the self-titled Gorillaz, was released, producing four singles. Clint Eastwood. 19-2000. Rock the House. and " Tomorrow Comes Today. In June 2001, 19–2000" a remix of the song was used as the title theme for EA Sports FIFA video game FIFA Football 2002. [23] On 7 December, the song " 911 " was released, a collaboration between Gorillaz and hip hop group D12 (without Eminem) and Terry Hall about the September 11 attacks. [24] Meanwhile, G Sides, a compilation of the B-sides from the Tomorrow Comes Today EP and first three singles, was released in Japan on 12 December. Gorillaz performed at the 2002 Brit Awards in London on 22 February, appearing in 3D animation on four large screens along with rap accompaniment by Phi Life Cypher. The band were nominated for four Brit Awards, including Best British Group, Best British Album and British Breakthrough Act, 25] but did not win any awards. [26] On 1 July 2002, a remix album titled Laika Come Home by Spacemonkeyz vs. Gorillaz was released. It contains most of the songs from the Gorillaz' first album, Gorillaz, but remixed in dub and reggae style. [27] On 18 November, a DVD titled Phase One: Celebrity Take Down was released. The DVD contains four promotional videos, the abandoned video for " 5/4. the Charts of Darkness documentary, the five Gorilla Bitez (comedic shorts starring the virtual characters) a tour of the website by the MEL 9000 server and more. The DVD's menu was designed much like the band's website and depicts an abandoned Kong Studios. [28] Rumours were circulating at this time that the Gorillaz team were busy preparing a film, but Hewlett said that the film project had been abandoned: We lost all interest in doing it as soon as we started meeting with studios and talking to these Hollywood executive types, we just weren't on the same page. We said, fuck it, we'll sit on the idea until we can do it ourselves, and maybe even raise the money ourselves. 29] Demon Days (2004–06. edit] The album Demon Days was released on 11 May 2005. [49] Plastic Beach and The Fall (2007–13. edit] In late 2007, Albarn and Hewlett began working on Carousel, a new Gorillaz project which eventually evolved into the band's third studio album Plastic Beach. The new version features a Gorillaz designed and styled interface, and is customised to generate Gorillaz samples from their album The Fall and includes 128 new sounds created by the band and 64 ready-to-use pre-programmed patterns from Gorillaz, Stephen Sedgwick (Gorillaz' engineer) and Korg. [62] On 9 February 2012, Gorillaz announced " DoYaThing. a single to promote the Gorillaz-branded Converse shoes that were soon to be released. The song would be part of Converse's "Three Artists, One Song" projects, with the two collaborators being James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and André 3000 of Outkast. An explicit, 13-minute-long version of the song became available for listening shortly after on Hewlett returned to direct the single's music video, featuring animated versions of the two collaborators on the track. [63] In April 2012, Albarn told The Guardian that he and Hewlett had fallen out and that future Gorillaz projects were "unlikely. 64] Tension between the two had been building, partly due to a belief held by Hewlett that his contributions to Gorillaz were being diminished. [107] The Now Now (2018–19. edit] In an interview with Q Magazine in September 2017, Albarn hinted at another potential Gorillaz album being in production. He mentioned enjoying the spontaneity of recording and debuting music while on tour, similarly to the band's 2010 release The Fall, but expressed desire to make it a comparatively more "complete" record, adding that "If we're going to do more with Gorillaz we don't want to wait seven years because, y'know, we're getting on a bit now. 108] At the end of the same month on 30 September 2017 while touring for Humanz, the band debuted a new song in Seattle called "Idaho. [151] Live performances [ edit] Gorillaz performed Demon Days at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York in April 2006. In March 2001, Gorillaz played their first show at the Scala in London before embarking on a tour later that summer, with one date in Paris and two in Japan. The show, called Gorillaz Live, saw the live band playing behind a giant projector screen which covered the whole stage, on which was projected various visuals and images created by Hewlett. After taking a short break over the holidays, the tour resumed with a North American leg in February 2002. [152] In November 2005, Gorillaz performed Demon Days Live, a five night residency at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, England in which the album Demon Days was presented in its entirety. The event was filmed by an EMI film crew for a DVD release, Demon Days Live, in late March 2006. Gorillaz headlined the final night of the Coachella Festival on 18 April 2010 as their first proper, full show. On 27 April they were the main guests on Later. with Jools Holland on the BBC. This makes me feel like I'm high or someone drugged me. After the one-night-only showing of Reject False Icons, I felt elated. I had just witnessed footage of my favorite band over 2 years as if I were a fly-on-the-wall. We got to see content not meant for the everyday viewer, but as fans, got the inside scoop all thanks to Denholm Hewlett. It's almost like Denholm is a fan of the band himself, and he knew exactly the kind of stuff we'd want to see. 😏
The name, Reject False Icons, is a reference to Phase 2, which I think is alluding to the fact that the film is solely about the "humanz" involved in the behemoth project that is Gorillaz. The film focuses mainly on Jamie, Damon, and the live band, however, a smattering of Jamie's colorful art, flashy music video footage, and live visuals keeps us entertained in the transitions. One unfortunate note is that the older music video footage did not seem to be ready for a giant screen, as much of it was still low-res.
The documentary opens up with an homage of the many phases of Gorillaz, finally landing on Jamie's post-apocalyptic/surreal art for Humanz, set to "Tranzformer." The movie is then broken up into three acts - essentially the 'making of' Humanz, Humanz on tour, and The Now Now on tour. Bizarre and cool interludes from Ben Mendelsohn help break up the narrative of the film.
To call the movie a traditional documentary is a bit of a stretch. It lacked narrative and was instead a collection of clips and dialogue (with each scene being no more than about 30 seconds long) documenting the Humanz and TNN tours as they progressed. That being said, the film was an absolute treat for die-hard fans of the band. We got to see and hear many early demos from Humanz and The Now Now - including a beautiful rendition of Busted and Blue by Kelela, a banging version of Phoenix on the Hill recorded in Jamaica, and what's potentially a previously-unheard TNN track, Founding Fathers.
There were also some very "meme-able" momentz coming from Mr. Albarn. I was delighted by the laugh my theatre got from watching him shuffle across the street in his pajamas, Smoggy declaring he had "a bit of a rough night."
My wishlist for the next Gorillaz documentary is perhaps something more interview based, where fans can learn more about the behind-the-scenes thinking that goes into making Gorillaz. For example, how Damon and co. select collaborators, and explaining who the collaborators are to people who aren't YET Gorillaz fans.
In comparison to Bananaz, this film comes across as far more polished and professional - reflecting a similar the journey that Gorillaz have taken these last couple of years. On the last night of the tour, Damon thanks the musicians & crew, saying their act had become "top class." While Bananaz may have been better as a look into the process and history, Reject False Icons was an absolute feast of material for fans to geek out on.

That we are introduced to it so early on in Reject False Icons, the feature documentary film that traces the “wondrous chaos” of the band over the last three years, is no surprise. What is striking, however, is just how alive this band is, unmasked from its central virtual characters by a dizzying display of revolving real-life musicians. Denholm Hewlett (the son of Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz animator and co-creator) crafts this documentary with natural flair and invites viewers to drop in on his fly-on-the-wall debut. We follow a loosely chronological timeline from the beginnings of the ‘Humanz recording sessions (Act One) in 2015 through to the bands ambitious Humaz world tour (Act Two) as well as the recording of the groups latest album, 2018s ‘The Now Now (Act Three. It hits you just how many people are involved in the Gorillaz project as a whole (Albarn counts “more than 100”. Beyond Albarn, for the first time we get to know the various people who are behind the virtual facades of 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel a little more – from snoozing touring musicians pranked into believing theyve missed soundcheck (poor Seye Adelekan) to playful arguments between Albarn and Hewlett about which songs to keep on ‘The Now Now. But these vignettes are all too brief. For the most part Reject False Icons is an unceremonious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of a busy band. Theres no extra commentary from the famously political Albarn beyond a few snatches (him saying off-camera that “the unimaginable” happened in reference to Donald Trumps election, for instance. Instead, the documentary flits between brilliantly visceral live clips from the world tour and Demon Dayz festivals (replete with incendiary guest performances by Little Simz, Vince Staples, Pusha T, Peven Everett and more) and black and white studio sessions overlaid with Hewletts animations. Reject False Icons isnt some companion piece to provide a deeper understanding of Gorillaz fictional dystopian-like world. Nor does it pretend to be. Fans and casual viewers alike will find much to enjoy in watching Albarn interact with producers, touring bandmates and an A+ guestlist of musicians including Mavis Staples and George Benson. It may lack in personal revelations, but it makes up for that as a vibrant celebration of one of Britains most idiosyncratic and inventive bands. New film Gorillaz: Reject False Icons documents aspects of the creative process, with director Denholm Hewlett gaining unheard of access. Moving between animated and physical realms, it features Gorillaz founders Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett at work in the studio, alongside a roll call that features a few of their lauded guests. Gorillaz are one big, big family As Damon Albarn attests, over 100 actors, musicians and artists have been involved in the Gorillaz musical output across 'Humanz' and 'The Now Now' as well as the world tour this film chronicles. Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn makes a few appearances, mainly cracking a few gags and doing some surreal voice work. Kali Uchis, Mavis Staples, Danny Brown, Vince Staples, Jenny Beth and many, many others come and go. Gorillaz have a pull that not many artists could command - everyone wants in. More importantly, for those involved there are positive vibes everywhere. Their togetherness is clear as they all join, arms interlocked, in a circle of positivity before every show. 2. Damon Albarn is as infectiously enthusiastic, charismatic and charming as ever The gold tooth, the goofy smile, the energy. Its all there, and its easy to see how Albarn carries his merry circus. Even when they only had five weeks to record 'The Now Now' in the middle of a world tour, we never saw any sign of personality clashes, issues in the relationship between sound and image, or tour induced exhaustion. The man is a force of nature. 3. Peven Everett is electric, on and off the stage Out of all the talented artists involved in the film, one stands out: Peven Everett. Getting to know Chicago Royalty Everett throughout the movie, he comes across as eminently likeable, infectiously enthusiastic and, obviously, enviably talented. He is certainly an able to deputy to the late Bobbie Womack. Everett is the sort of guy you would work with in a heartbeat. And introduce to your mum. 4. Jamie Hewlett's artwork is stunning, but there could be more on show… Okay, so we all knew this. For over 20 years weve salivated over Hewlett Sr. s work in bringing to life the original four Gorillaz concept characters. And having waited so many years for a film (this is the second after Ceri Levys 2008 piece Bananaz) we were hoping to get more of a behind-the-scenes look at Jamie Hewletts creative process. However, Reject False Icons prioritises studio footage over a deeper look at how the visuals are created. Maybe Hewlett Jr. wanted to make sure Dad didnt become the star of the show. 5. Denholm Hewlett is still raw This was a big opportunity for Denholm Hewlett to make an early name for himself. Given how instantly recognisable and distinct Gorillaz artwork is, there was always going to be pressure on Denholm as a film maker to firmly step out of his fathers shadow. After all, no one wants to be known as Someone Elses Kid. In the end, the story lacked cohesion. It is hard to gain a real insight into the inner workings of Gorillaz when the film is largely a series of vignettes of Albarn and his merry crew larking around in the studio. In short, the final cut feels more like a sentimental, unprovocative journey than a revealing glimpse into what makes the band tick. Are Murdoc, 2-D, Noodle and Russel are being fazed out. One noticeable absence from the film was the, rightly iconic, original conceptual band members. Evolution is inevitable, and after 20 years Murdoc, 2-D, Noodle and Russel are gradually being overwhelmed. To say they are being marginalised feels crude, although maybe were just feeling a touch nostalgic. Were not suggesting all good things come to an end, maybe they just evolve. A new Gorillaz documentary will be available in cinemas worldwide for one night only. Gorillaz: Reject False Icons will be screened on December 16. The film, directed by Denholm Hewlett, son of Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett, captures the band at work in the studio and on stage. Denholm was on hand with cameras rolling for a three-year period that included the making of LPs Humanz and The Now Now and saw Gorillaz embark on a massive world tour. Jamie Hewlett and fellow Gorillaz co-founder Damon Albarn star in the film along with producers The Twilite Tone of D. It's the fact that Resistance isn't actually tied up in galactic conflicts and fights between good and evil that makes it unique to the rest of the saga. Instead, Resistance follows Kaz Xiono, a young pilot who is recruited by Poe Dameron to spy on the First Order. So heres a linky-link to the post (to be honest, Im trying a new client, so if it doesnt show up, just tell me nicely because the link looks weird) and an explanation of the glitch: apparently there was a bug in Le Guin where when you started a new game on about 5% of Windows compys that it would stall (not freeze; the cursor would still animate and the launch screen would still change like normal) for forever. Literally. Some people I could find with the glitch in Le Guin forums waited 20 minutes and got nowhere before getting task manager. The one person who had any idea what it could be related to said that they found it was related to Chinese localized files clogging up the game and giving certain compys of English-running Windows 10 a run for their money, but even though they were a mod developer, they couldnt figure out how to release a patch, so its not like I can go to Steam and download a patch like I slapped modded cityscapes over the missing cityscapes. Ok, first thing, thanks to u/Dantallica for being the only one to comment, and having hope in my ambitions for getting off the ground. Props to you. *Salutes* Second thing, apparently there was a horrible intervention in my experiment. Some mod has apparently revived an old Le Guin (my fingers keep trying to spell it Le Quin; damn it. bug in my copy of the game, and I have no idea which one. So thanks to that mod for keeping me up 24 hours (not kidding) and making me miss school (also not kidding) and sleep for 24 hours (also not kidding) due to numerous attempts to try to fix the bug overnight. I need help with possible ideas debugging, but I need creative ideas. My rustbucket runs on magic sparkles and unicorn sh*t at this point, and I mean the unicorn sh*t: some of these mods have been specifically laid out as incompatible/clashing, and yet somehow they work.
